Gifted and Talented Program

"EXPANDING BOUNDARIES"

GATS Withdrawal Program

Phase 1 of the Gifted and Talented program at Lake Macquarie High School began in semester 2, 2006. A select group of students from both Years 7 and 8 were chosen from a large field to comprise the first GATS withdrawal class. An extensive identification and selection process was undertaken to choose the best students from across both years.
These students meet twice a week, as one group, and undertake a project around a central theme. Students are given the scope to choose an area of interest from any of the Key Learning Areas within the school. This cross-curricular , multi-year initiative is unique within the Lake Macquarie area.

GATS Classes in Stage 4

Students entering Year7 will have the opportunity to apply for placement in the Gifted and Talented class from 2007. This program will be available to Year 8 in 2008.

Lake Macquarie High School will be offering parents and students the opportunity to work in an environment which recognises and celebrates achievement across the curriculum from 2007. The introduction of a specific GATS class will be supported by a base of dedicated and specially trained teachers, responsible for offering a differentiated curriculum, aimed at inspiring and challenging students with specific gifts and talents.

Students ultimately offered placement in these classes will have been identified using criteria established by the NSW Department of Education.
